in persuit of the 5 way perception cube

First off what is a 5 way perception cube. Well its thte idea of taking lenticular printing to the next level . By making 4 or 5 images appear on one side of a object. Now that was an idea i had already dealt with.
this having 5 way perception when the background is included
Translating this into a cube should have been easier then i made it. It took me 4 attempts to make the cube.

First attempt

Third attempt

Then I finally figured out what i needed to make.

Lenticle printing and Light source as an indicater

Saw this fence while out on a walk. Reminded me of  lenticle printing. One thing struck me tho about this. I was able to move so that when i looked at the fence all i could see was the lit up parts. Then when i changed my possition and walked along the fenced i was able to note that the lite parts of the fence grew smaller as the light source got further away . This reminded me of the line of sight and explains why in my lenticle printing a certain amount of distortion took place.  Note to self : Use a light source to indicate the viewers perspective.

For example here is the diminishing line of sight as illustrated by the light.

Monday Anamorphic experiments

Anamorphic experiments

The aims here were to produce a successful method in making normal images into anamorphic designs.
The anamorphic pieces here when viewed from a certain angle look proportionate.
This blog post shall be updated with the angler photos.

So I drew this tester and put a grid on it.
Then I remade a to scale grid and poked holes at the points of intersection.
Setting up the to scale grid I placed it at 90 degrees and shone a light at it.
The light shinning on the card is a representation of the human line of sight.

The shadow cast is an elongated distortion of the square grid.
The points of intersection are illuminated.
I marked down the points of intersection.
By making a new grid based off of these points of intersection making an elongated image becomes easy.
Elongated.
Slightly more elongated.
As the torches were not overly obviously distorted  I wanted to see what would happen to a more familiar  sight such as a face .

I bought L.E.Ds as they produced a brighter light. Making the shadow easier to outline.

I felt the need to distort the image further. I made an exactly half size scale grid of the image. The method of puncturing holes in the card i felt was lacking in accuracy so I cut squares out of the intersecting points. Then I  proceeded the process.

This being the result. Although quite stretched I am interested in seeing how far the image can be stretched before it loses its form completely that is losing its form completely when viewed from the right angle to make the image appear proportionate.

Week 5 I think

for 5 way lenticle printing

when viewed from five different angles 5 different images
shall be shown
90 degree angle and a 45

Hairline where does Marias stop and mine begin?

mark making with cardboard

prespective illusion. When veiwed from a certain
angle the piece looks normal. As demonstrated by the
mirror
me trying to figure out the ratio of distance and height

This then is then is two hexaflexagons put together into a ring.

Then i started working with the the idea of making a form of hexaflexagon but using cubes. This was the result although not the aim still pretty cool.

This way of taping was more successful.

Bert Simons Paper Sculptures

Bert Simons has done what i was aiming to do. It is amazing. In tribute to him and also to learn from his technique i decided to make him. Thankfully he has provided a template to print offhttp://www.bertsimons.nl/files/bouwplaat.pdf . Learned a lot from following this.
i unfortunetly made the piece into to pieces and i had aimed to join them together in the end which proved quite difficult. Make sure if your trying this to make it all as on piece the whole way through. I would recommend starting from the bottom up. I will try to stick the piece more together.

I wound up with 11 sheets of paper

I actually heard it say "KILL MEEE"

Lenticular printing

So what i have been essentially doing is known as  Lenticular printing. Here is a video of a piece i made last Monday  The positioning of the skull and face is a bit off.  If i was to do it again i would align the eyes and the nose.

THORSDAY. Love Thursdays. Productivity went up. Realized that i could make an images appear on the cardboard when viewed only from a certain angle.

Next step is cutting up photos and sticking then on the grooves.
And working with 3D objects and drawing on the ridges
I hope to also make ridges that allow for 4 images to be hidden on a piece.

Back to play school.

The rest of this most enjoyable week was spent making things that seemed to have little correlation to the project.
Tuesday and Wednesday was like play-school.
We made cup phones and instruments using cups. It was very interesting and fun. There is definitely some potential in the experiments we did what that is has yet to be revealed to me.

Felt i had been quite unproductive. So i decided to build the following on a larger scale.

I went and got cardboard from the supply place. This cardboard was not suited to the task however i did find its grooves interesting
I was in a strange adjitated state.  I made the following weird mask.
The illusion of the self and how some hide their true feelings came to mind.

I began to play around with the groves and the idea came to me that flattening the grooves would create impressions. All we ever do is make impressions on people.

Delighted i ended up with this grooved cardboard by accident as it was a lot more fun to play with.
This is a photo of the inside of the card rolled onto itself.
